Sidney Erwin, known as Sid King, was born on October 15, 1936, in Denton, Texas.
He started his music career as a singer and guitarist, forming a band with
Melvin Robinson in 1952. The group initially performed country music and Western
swing under the name the Western Melody Makers. In 1954, they signed to Columbia
Records as Sid King and the Five Strings, incorporating rhythm and blues
influences into their "hillbilly bebop" style. Between 1955 and 1957, they
recorded nine singles for Columbia, including "Good Rockin' Baby" and "Gonna
