Born Albert James Ellis in Bradenton, Florida on April 21, 1941, the jazz, soul, and funk saxophonist is better known by his nickname Pee Wee Ellis. While he released some impressive albums as a solo artist, he is best known as a sideman for James Brown and other artists including Van Morrison. He grew up in Lubbock, Texas before moving to Rochester, New York. In the mid-1950s, he performed in high school and took lessons from jazz legend Sonny Rollins.
