Singer Pedro Fernández was born José Cobos in Guadalajara and originally rose to prominence as a child star under the stage name Pedrito Fernández, only shortening his name when he reached the age of 16. By the time he was in his mid-teens Cobos was already an established recording artist having released 13 albums, he had also begun acting and in 1978 landed the starring role as Raúl in the film 'La Niña de la Mochila Azul'.
