American singer. He began his musical journey at a young age, singing in local
radio broadcasts by four and performing in the Lionel Hampton Show at nine. Mel
Carter was also a member of The Carvetts, a gospel group led by his mother. In
the early 1960s, he started recording singles for small labels like Arwin and
