Chung Jae-young, known professionally as J or J.ae, was born on May 2, 1977, in
South Korea and is a Korean-American singer based in South Korea. She immigrated
to the United States at one year old and grew up in San Francisco, California,
and later Springfield, Virginia. Her father, Chung Hee-taek, was the former
vocalist of the rock band He Six. J.ae debuted in 1998 with the album Gold,
which had two versions—J-Gold and J-Blue—with seven tracks in common and four
